Hong Kong to assess need for tropical cyclone warning signals on Tuesday or Wednesday

The weather is expected to become windier, with occasional heavy showers and squally thunderstorms affecting Guangdong's coastal areas from early to midweek.

The Hong Kong Observatory will assess the need for issuing tropical cyclone warning signals over the next two days as Tropical Cyclone Narra is forecast to move closer to the vicinity of the Leizhou Peninsula.

According to the Observatory, Narra is expected to linger near Beibu Wan today (24 August 2026) before gradually turning northeastwards later today through Tuesday (25 August). The Observatory will closely monitor its movement and changes in local wind conditions, and assess the need for issuing tropical cyclone warning signals on Tuesday or Wednesday (26 August).

Members of the public are advised to stay alert to the latest weather updates.

Meanwhile, three other tropical cyclones are also active across the Pacific region. Tropical Cyclone Gaenari, currently near Taiwan, has a relatively small circulation and remains weak in intensity. It poses little direct threat to Hong Kong and is expected to gradually dissipate near the Taiwan Strait today.

Tropical Cyclone Saudel is forecast to move towards the vicinity of the Ryukyu Islands over the next couple of days. Its subsequent track remains uncertain, although it is more likely to move towards the coast of eastern China. Under the influence of associated subsiding air, temperatures across southern China are expected to rise significantly later this week.

Separately, Tropical Cyclone Atsani is expected to move across the western North Pacific today and tomorrow.

Locally, it will be mainly cloudy with a few showers and isolated thunderstorms. Showers are expected to become more frequent over the next couple of days, accompanied by squally thunderstorms and stronger winds in some areas. It will become very hot later this week.
