Dear Readers,
When you look up at the sky tonight, you'll likely see a bright, full round moon shining overhead. That can only mean one thing: the Mid-Autumn Festival is here.
Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is one of the most cherished traditional celebrations across Asia.
For centuries, the festival has symbolised reunion, togetherness, and harmony. Families, friends, and colleagues, whether they meet every day or live miles apart, come together to celebrate with greetings, festive treats, laughter, and meaningful moments of connection.
While many of us associate the festival with mooncakes, lanterns, and family gatherings, there is rich history and cultural heritage behind the annual celebration.
Here are three interesting facts about the Mid-Autumn Festival that you may not know:
The festival is linked to the legendary tale of Chang'e
One of the most famous Mid-Autumn Festival stories is the legend of Chang'e, who is said to have ascended to the moon after consuming an elixir of immortality. She later became known as the Moon Goddess and remains a central figure in many Mid-Autumn traditions. The Jade Rabbit, another popular figure in the legend, is believed to have accompanied her on the moon.
The festival celebrates gratitude and the harvest season
The Mid-Autumn Festival also has deep roots in harvest celebrations. In ancient agricultural societies, the festival coincided with the completion of the autumn harvest. Farmers would celebrate a year of hard work and a fruitful season by giving thanks for their crops and praying for continued prosperity.
The festival is about more than just mooncakes
Mooncakes may be the most iconic Mid-Autumn delicacy, but they are far from the only festive food enjoyed during the celebration. Other traditional treats include glutinous rice balls (tong yuen), osmanthus wine or tea, pomelo, and star fruit, which all symbolise completeness, harmony, auspiciousness, prosperity, and good fortune.
As gratitude remains an important part of the festival, this is a perfect time not only to spend quality time with loved ones, but also to celebrate your own achievements, whether big or small. Reflect on how far you have come this year, appreciate the milestones you've achieved, and look ahead to the goals and aspirations you hope to meet in the months to come.
