Up the ranks: HSBC appoints David Gareth Thomas as new head of HR, Asia Pacific

Effective May 2019, David Gareth Thomas is the new head of human resources for Asia Pacific and group general manager at HSBC.

Based in Hong Kong, he will manage the HR function to lead the development of strategic human resources policies and practices across the Asia Pacific region.

He will also provide executive relationship management and counsel to the group managing director and regional leaders on all HR capital-related issues, including organisation design and structure, executive resourcing and reward, and people implications of mergers or acquisitions.

Before his current role, he spent five years at Manulife Financial (Asia) as head of HR and senior VP, and 12 years at Standard Chartered Bank in various HR roles, culminating in almost three years as global head of country HR.

He is a seasoned HR pro and before his time in Asia, spent almost three years as head of HR for Royal Bank of Scotland/NatWest (North America) and three years as head of HR at NatWest in its debt markets division.
