The value of succession planning

Succession planning is more important than ever due to increasing talent retention pressures and the need for business to not slow when key staff exit. With this situation, how can HR leaders ensure quality human capital capacity in the long run?

Talent Management Asia 2016, an annual two-day conference in Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore in March 2016, has secured the most credible names in the industry to discuss the value of succession planning.

“Unpredictability makes it a challenge for HR practitioners to fill critical positions with people who possess the right competencies, work attitude and ability to strengthen the organisational culture,” said Aditi Sharma Kalra, regional editor of Human Resources magazine.

“Talent Management Asia 2016 will reveal proactive strategies and the latest principles in shaping a succession planning program that will prepare the future leaders of their companies.”

Now in its 4th year, Talent Management Asia will explore the most pressing issues organisations and HR practitioners are currently facing today. Here is how one of the topics, succession planning, will be presented at the event.

David Heng, managing director & head of talent management at CIMB Group, will lead a stream session on how to institutionalise talent management for long-term organisational vitality. He will demonstrate an integrated approach to succession management that can effectively support organisation growth.

Heng will also describe the process of identifying key talents as well as programs that can develop their leadership skills to move up to new roles. A leaders’ panel discussion comprising of HR heads at BT, Feruni Ceramiche and USG Boral will characterise the paradigm for effective change management and organisation effectiveness. Panellists will discuss how to determine the individuals who can lead the changes and integrate with senior management for the changes.

In addition, Talent Management Asia delegates will get techniques on how to manage a talent pool and succession from the keynote presentation of Peter Wood, vice president, talent management, global human resources at Schneider Electric.

He will demonstrate how Schneider Electric develops its talent with the use of integrated talent management processes. This frame includes establishing a culture of people development and linking performance management to talent management.

Senior HR executives from Mitsubishi Corporation, Stephane Michaud, regional manager Asia & Oceania, strategic planning & HRD, and Toyohiro Matsuda, head of HRD, Asia, will present a case study that exemplifies various talent management strategies that apply to all generations and variations of the workforce. They will share experiences and ideas on how to manage a global, dispersed and agile workforce and how to leverage the multigenerational workforce.

A C-suite panel discussion will probe the most effective process of identifying, nurturing and empowering the ones who will run the business in the future.

The panel will examine challenges surrounding succession planning, such as the suitable approach to Generation Y employees, the need for a formal succession planning, and the effective implementation of management trainee programmes especially for the Gen Y talent.

The list of companies participating in the Talent Management Asia 2016 agenda is continuously growing, and among the top ones are Abbvie, Archroma, Emerio, Mitsubishi and Schneider Electric. All presenters & panellists, such as Angeline Oh, group talent management & development vice president at SingTel, are director or vice president level HR professionals with regional responsibility.
