PwC rewards employees with HK$2018 red packet

Tomorrow is Lunar New Year's Eve. Traditionally, companies will give out red packets (lai see) to staff after the holiday. And this year, employees from Big Four accounting firms can expect a more generous one with huge amounts of lucky money.

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) confirms with Human Resources it has sent an internal email to staff, saying that the company will distribute a 2018-dollar lai see to each employee this year “in recognition of everyone’s contribution”. The money will be directly deposited into employees’ bank account today (Feb 14).

“We know all of you have been working days and nights not only in peak season but throughout the year. Resources continue to be tight despite we have continuously hired mid-joiners. I would like to thank all of you who decide to stay and work with us through this peak season and I welcome those who join us lately,” the email said.

In addition, the audit firm also gives a CNY greeting card along with a small gift for each employee.

Some employees from PwC believe that the management would like to reward and comfort employees by giving huge red packets since many people are recently leaving the company because of heavy workload. However, some employees regard this as compensation since they didn’t get a salary increase as much as those working at the other Big Four accounting firms.

Apart from accounting firms, Ocean Park also announced to giving out lai see to employees.  "In recognisation of our employees’ valuable contribution to Ocean Park, all eligible full-time and part-time employees will receive a Lai See (red packet for Lunar New Year) of HK$1,200 and HK$600 respectively," its says in a statement to Human Resources.

Full-time employees who work during the first three days of Chinese New Year holiday will also get a triple pay.
