Marissa Mayer received US$500,000 worth of security benefits

CEO Marissa Mayer received her standard US$1 million annual salary in 2015, along with various stock awards that swelled the total value of her compensation to US$35,981,107.

But that is not all, the company is also paying its top boss an extra $544,061 to protect her, according to Yahoo's latest SEC filing.

The company spent just US$26,891 on Marissa Mayer’s security costs in 2014. But in 2015, that number jumped to US$544,061.

That’s because the CEO “faced specific security threats” that the company “believed were credible,” the filing stated.

The company didn’t elaborate on the threats.

Yahoo's filing added the compensation committee does not consider her security benefit to be a compensatory perk and "authorised these arrangements for business purposes regardless of any value they may have to Ms. Mayer personally”.

The filing noted that these security services also protected Mayer’s immediate family.

By comparison, Facebook appears to have shelled out much more dough for the security of its leader.

The social-media company spent $5 million last year to make sure its co-founder and CEO had protection around the clock.

The security package includes bodyguards, private-jet travel and maintenance of alarms, cameras and other equipment at his residences, documents show.

The New York Post reported in February that Mark Zuckerberg had 16 bodyguards working in shifts to trail him.

Apple, meanwhile, spent just $275,000 on security for CEO Tim Cook.
