How 4 firms made recruitment in Malaysia more innovative

The tableware is laid, the champagne ready - and this year's winners of the best recruitment innovation (among agencies) are JobStreet.com, Accendo HR, ManpowerGroup Malaysia, and Hanodale Technologies.

The prizes were handed out at the recent inaugural Asia Recruitment Awards in Malaysia, with the jury comprising top HR leaders from across the region.

JobStreet.com, the winner of the gold, has been credited with introducing richer job ads and a salary matching feature on its website, in a bid to manage the large volumes of job candidates applying for jobs.

Another unique aspect of this initiative is a new personalised homepage, that upon login, shows lesser but more relevant jobs to the seeker.

As a result of the new features, the website was able to match jobs to 0.9-1.2% of expected salary, as well as get more accurate matches for the employers.

"We are very pleased that JobStreet.com has been acknowledged for its advances and innovations in the industry," noted Simon Si Thean Choy, the firm's head of regional communications.

"With our understanding and insights on the market, as well our passion for technology, we will continue to evolve the future of online recruitment."

Accendo HR took home the silver, for its efforts in streamlining the candidate application process for its client, by eliminating the need for both hard copies and manual intervention.

The company laid out a plan to manage technical queries from applicants, as well as shortlist the most promising ones, providing them a summarised list of the top 100 candidates, as a result saving the client's time, and enabling them to make better decisions.

Sharma KSK Lachu, Accendo HR's group CEO, affirmed that innovation is at the centre of everything the company does, be it process or technology.

"Winning this silver is a nice pat on the back for us but it also serves as a reminder to keep innovating and be daring," he added.

ManpowerGroup Malaysia and Hanodale Technologies shared the bronze award.

The former, ManpowerGroup, embarked on a mission to remove the inefficiencies in its branch network business model, by working on the challenges of disconnection and limited interaction between branches, and maximising job opportunities for candidates.

After a process involving inputs from all ends, including 360-degree ideation with core employees, the outcome was a structure based on 3 vertical brands, i.e. Manpower, Experis and Right Management.

While the new structure is still being implemented, an indicator of its progress is that revenue grew by 25% in January this year, up from the same period last year.

Explained Michelle Teoh, strategic account manager, on this initiative: "In 2014, we evolved away from a decentralised network to an efficient hub – centre of excellence."

"The bold move impacted not only the overall efficiency of operations but benefited clients, associates and employees."

Hanodale Technologies also worked on an overhaul of sorts, looking to make processes in its talent management services unit more agile.

The team designed a new system called TMS BOSS, keeping in mind inputs from various internal functions as well as clients and candidates.

After piloting for three months, the company had a soft launch in early 2014, and the next update is likely to see new features such a performance management system, and integration with Whatsapp and other digital media.

One of the early wins is that the company's turnaround time has reduced from two business days to just four hours, leading to both more customers and revenue.

Venkatesh Prabhu, the company’s MD, commented, "Innovation happens when we pay attention to the challenges, and continuously work to overcome them completely."
