"This collaboration will also create new opportunities for Singapore’s talent and research community, providing them with access to world-class AI tools for scientific research and discovery," said Jermaine Loy, Managing Director, EDB.

With more than half of the world's population living within the APAC region, and in a nod to Singapore's forward-looking approach to artificial intelligence, Google DeepMind has opened a new research lab in Singapore to advance AI across APAC.

Per an announcement on 19 November 2025, the new research lab will focus on collaboration as Google DeepMind will be working directly with government, businesses, civil society, and academic institutions across the region.

Some current examples shared include:

  • In science, a multidisciplinary research team at Singapore's Agency of Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the National Neuroscience Institute (NNI) uses Google DeepMind’s AlphaFold to better understand Parkinson's Disease.
  • In public services, GovTech, the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Google have launched an AI agent sandbox to safely test autonomous solutions for the public sector.
  • In multilinguality, Google DeepMind and AI Singapore launched Project Aquarium, an open data platform for Southeast Asian languages.
    • Google DeepMind has also expanded its partnership to help develop SEA-LION – a family of LLMs trained and tuned to be representative of Southeast Asia’s cultural contexts and linguistic nuances.
  • For startups, Google supports Singaporean AI-first startups with its Google for Startups: AI First accelerator, which uses generative AI to tackle significant economic, societal and environmental issues.

Lila Ibrahim, Chief Operating Officer, Google DeepMind commented: “Singapore’s forward-looking approach and unique position make it the ideal place for our new Google DeepMind AI research lab.

"We are here to harness the region’s exceptional talent, drive purposeful research, and build the essential partnerships to advance AI responsibly and deliver tangible, global impact.”

Jermaine Loy, Managing Director, EDB, added that the collaboration will "also create new opportunities for Singapore’s talent and research community, providing them with access to world-class AI tools for scientific research and discovery.

Looking ahead, through its new AI research lab, Google DeepMind aims to continue collaborating with the region's vibrant ecosystem of partners to unlock AI's transformative benefits for diverse communities.
