Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil says the claim came from a junior Bangladeshi minister and does not reflect an official decision by the Bangladesh government.
A statement by a Bangladeshi junior minister claiming that Malaysia planned to recruit 200,000 workers from Bangladesh does not reflect its government's official stance, Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications has clarified.
The claim was made by Shahe Alam, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives on Sunday, as reported by New Age, following a meeting at the Secretariat in Dhaka between Mohd Suhaida Osman, Malaysian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, and Abdul Moyeen Khan, Bangladesh’s Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister.
As reported by Bernama, Datuk Fahmi said Datuk Seri Ramanan Ramakrishnan, Minister of Human Resources had confirmed that the statement was made by a junior member of the Bangladesh government and did not represent the country’s official position.
“It was issued by, as I understand, a junior minister. Therefore, it does not represent an official decision of the Bangladesh government,” he said at a press conference after the Cabinet meeting in Putrajaya yesterday.
Meanwhile, as further quoted, Datuk Fahmi said the Cabinet had also been informed that 1,476 Myanmar nationals held at immigration detention depots would be repatriated to Myanmar at the end of September.
He said all 1,476 had signed documents indicating their agreement to return to Myanmar voluntarily. More than 10,000 Myanmar nationals were being held at immigration detention depots, with the Home Ministry screening 5,000 names before submitting them to the Myanmar Embassy.
“From that list, Myanmar has agreed to receive 1,476 of them, and the repatriation will take place at the end of September,” he said.
Datuk Fahmi also said the Foreign Ministry had received assurances from the Myanmar government that it would guarantee the safety of those being repatriated.
