Celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival 2025 in Hong Kong: Moon-watching tips, weather updates & transport arrangements

Plan your celebrations with the best moon-viewing times, weather forecast, and special traffic and transport arrangements across Hong Kong.

This year’s Mid-Autumn Festival falls on Monday, 6 October 2025. According to the Hong Kong Observatory, the full moon will appear the day following the Mid-Autumn Festival (7 October). If weather permits, a bright and round moon will still be visible at night during the Mid-Autumn Festival period.

Weather forecast

Tropical Cyclone Matmo is expected to move across the central and northern parts of the South China Sea in the coming days, bringing windy conditions and squally showers to southern China from later Saturday to Sunday.

However, as Matmo weakens and moves away, the weather will improve and sunny intervals are forecast over the coast of Guangdong at the Mid-Autumn Festival and on the day after.


Festive activities

The Mid-Autumn Lantern Carnival 2025 is currently running at Victoria Park until 7 October. The displays are lit from 6.30pm to 11pm daily and extended to midnight on Mid-Autumn Day (6 October).

In addition, the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance performance will take place from 5 to 7 October. The performance will move to Victoria Park on 6 October at 10.30pm. During this period, road closure and traffic diversion arrangements will be implemented in the vicinity of Tai Hang.


Transport & traffic arrangements

To accommodate the festivities, special traffic and transport measures will be in place across Hong Kong on 6 and 7 October.

Road closures and traffic diversions

Affected areas include:

  • Hong Kong Island: Causeway Bay, The Peak, Aberdeen, Pok Fu Lam, Repulse Bay, Shek O
  • New Territories: Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan, Ma On Shan

Note: Some parking spaces, taxi stands, and public light bus stands in the above areas will also be suspended.

Public transport adjustments on 6 October

  • MTR: All lines (except the Airport Express, Disneyland Resort Line, and the section of East Rail Line to and from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations) will operate overnight, and strengthen services from 3pm onwards.
  • Light rail: Seven routes will operate overnight.
  • Trams: Services will be extended to 1am of the following day, and will be strengthened subject to passenger demand.
  • Buses and green minibuses: 
    • Three special bus routes (N64P, N272 and 173R) will be operated.
    • Franchised bus companies will also extend the service hours of four bus routes and adjust the frequency/departure time of some routes respectively.
    • Nine green minibus routes will extend their service hours.
    • 34 bus routes and 14 green minibus routes will be diverted and adjust their stop locations temporarily in connection with the road closures and traffic diversion arrangements.
  • Ferries: Star Ferry, Sun Ferry, and Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry will strengthen services subject to passenger demand.
