Around 10% of employees admit to having sex in the workplace, while a quarter admit to “thinking about it”, a new survey has found.
Almost half (41%) of employees surveyed by Glassdoor also said they suspect their colleagues had become intimate at the office.
Out of more than 1,000 anonymous replies to the survey, 37% said they had been involved in office romances and 51% believe it’s not a problem for co-workers to date.
However, 54% also said office flings are likely to end in tears and “awkward” conversations.
Glassdoor's career and workplace expert, Rusty Rueff, told the Houston Chronicle that staff shouldn’t feel bad about getting it on with their colleagues.
“Don't feel guilty for falling in love at work. Your employer worked hard to fill the company with people who share the same values, principles, work ethic, skills, and education,” he said.
“Plus, you're together for eight to 12 hours a day. So it's not that surprising that romances tend to spark between employees. No matter what happens, don't feel guilty.”
However, he suggests any co-working couples don’t go public with their relationship until they are sure it will go the distance.
“Since not all companies will be happy about your good news, it's in your interest—and the interest of your partner—to be sure the relationship is real and worth investing in before having that conversation with the boss.”
