RM1.1bn Rahmah Cash Contribution to reach 5mn recipients from 20 January

The payout will range from RM100 and RM500, depending on each recipient's eligibility category.

The Malaysia Government will start distributing Phase 1 of the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) for 2026 from 20 January, following an announcement by Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in his New Year’s Message on 5 January.

A total of RM1.1bn has been allocated for this phase, benefitting 3.7mn households and 1.3mn single senior citizens. Eligible recipients will receive between RM100 and RM500, depending on their eligibility category.

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) said in its 14 January reminder that the payout forms part of broader efforts to ease cost-of-living pressures more effectively.

STR and SARA restructured for 2026

As part of the 2026 changes, the Government has restructured the STR and the Rahmah Basic Contribution (SARA) to provide more consistent support throughout the year.

Under the revised framework, more than 8mn people are now eligible to receive SARA assistance on a monthly basis, including 400,000 individuals classified as poor or very poor under the eKasih database. SARA is positioned as a basic, ongoing form of support.

In contrast, STR will be provided quarterly, acting as additional assistance for households and senior citizens without a partner earning RM5,000 or below per month, including those registered under eKasih.

According to the Ministry, this integrated approach is intended to ensure aid is delivered in a more orderly, stable, and targeted manner, while giving households additional financial space during periods of higher spending, such as festive seasons.

The total allocation for STR and SARA in 2026 stands at RM15bn.

Raising living standards through targeted support

Speaking on the intent behind the assistance, PM Anwar said the MADANI Economic Framework aims to raise living standards so that all Malaysians can progress together.

“When the people are protected and basic needs are met, we can surely raise the economic ceiling together in a more vibrant and sustainable way,” he shared.

Applications, eligibility and verification

New STR applications and appeals are open throughout the year via the official portal. Applicants are assessed based on set income limits, with each submission undergoing review and verification involving multiple government agencies.

For new applicants, quarterly checks will also cover home ownership, vehicle ownership, business ownership, as well as records of working or living abroad.

The Ministry stressed that applicants are responsible for ensuring all information provided is accurate and truthful. Legal action may be taken if false information is found, and approved assistance may be withdrawn in cases of non-compliance.

Warning against scams

MOF also reminded recipients to stay alert to fraud and fake links. It reiterated that the Government does not request personal information via SMS or WhatsApp, and that updates should only be checked through official portals.
