Employees will welcome the Silver Week and enjoy five consecutive days off in September next year.
Japan's Cabinet Office has released the list of general holidays for 2026.
Typically, the country has 16 fixed public holidays each year. However, next year, employees will benefit from a “bonus” day off in September between Respect for the Aged Day and Autumnal Equinox Day.
This extra holiday occurs when a regular working day falls between the two holidays in September. This marks the arrival of the “Silver Week”, a counterpart to the long Golden Week break in spring, meaning people will enjoy five consecutive days off.
Since Silver Week only happens in certain years, it is also referred to as “Platinum Week” due to its rarity.
