Marriage, children, and financial stability: Home Affairs Minister Shanmugam on what matters in Long-Term Visit Pass Applications

Having detailed assessment criteria could affect Singapore’s international relations and potentially allow individuals to game the system, he noted.

Several factors are taken into account when it comes to Long-Term Visit Pass (LTVP) applications for foreign spouses of Singapore Citizens (SCs), including the length of marriage, whether the couple has children from the marriage, and more.

In a recent Parliamentary response, K. Shanmugam, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs, said applications are assessed holistically. Among the considerations are how long the couple has been married, whether they share children, the sponsor’s ability to financially support the family, and whether either party has adverse records.

The Minister added that the Government does not publish detailed assessment criteria. Doing so, he explained, could affect Singapore’s international relations and potentially allow individuals to game the system.

"For similar reasons, we do not publish approval and rejection rates by nationality, as this could cause bilateral sensitivities and is not in our national interest," he elaborated.
