Malaysia will reopen employment to foreign workers

Bangladeshi manpower can soon begin work in Malaysia’s plantation, manufacturing and construction sectors again. Lifting the ban in May, Malaysia will once again take Bangladeshi manpower under the “Government to Government Plus” (G2G Plus) agreement was signed between the two governments.

Although there has been no official announcement on the reopening, Dhaka Tribune has reported that “an official from the Bangladesh High Commission in Malaysia has confirmed that soon workers will be able to go to that country through a rigorous official process”.

Commenting further on the situation, the high commission official said: “As Bangladesh was able to sign the MoU (memorandum of understanding) with Malaysia at the last moment, we have obtained the source country designation and retained a pathway for Bangladeshi manpower export”.

With regard to when Malaysia will officially be taking Bangladeshi manpower under the G2G Plus scheme, Expatriates Ministry’s Additional Secretary Zabed Ahmed said that while “Bangladeshi migrants are still going to Malaysia on a limited scale, (but) migration under the G2G Plus scheme has not started yet.

Regardless, he reaffirmed that “the whole process will be maintained and monitored by the ministry” once the announcement has been made. The G2G Plus scheme allows recruiting agencies in Bangladesh to send manpower through a new online database. Following that, these potential migrants would need to go through a medical test and security clearance test before coming to Malaysia.
