Malaysia to consider special business package to tackle impact of US tariffs

As of now, Minister Tengku Datuk Zafrul Abdul Aziz estimates the final decision to be made in July.

A special package for businesses affected by the United States (US) tariffs is under consideration in Malaysia. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) came to this consideration after assessing the impact of the recent US tariffs and its effects to the country’s fiscal position, according to Bernama.

Per the report, Minister Tengku Datuk Zafrul Abdul Aziz shared that the government will focus on reciprocal negotiations with the US starting 6 May to ensure no tariffs are imposed on Malaysia, especially in key sectors.

Currently, the basic tariff imposed on Malaysia is 10% while some other sectors are not subjected to any tariffs.

Minister Tengku further responded to a question-and-answer segment during MITI’s 1Q 2025 performance report card media briefing, that the decision can only be made after discussions with the US are completed as they uncover the affected parties.

He also estimated the final decision to be made in July once meetings with the US concludes.
