Set to begin operations in early 2027, the Institute will initially focus on AI while supporting talent development and innovation.
HSBC has announced plans to establish a global AI & Emerging Technology Institute in Hong Kong in partnership with the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), marking the latest step in the bank’s growing investment in AI research, talent development, and technological innovation.
Announced on the opening day of Hong Kong FinTech Week (2 November), the Institute is expected to begin operations in early 2027 and will be based in Hong Kong’s Northern Metropolis.
Initially, the Institute will focus on AI, including AI upskilling, AI safety and fraud detection, post-quantum cryptography, and blockchain. By bringing together research capabilities and technology deployment teams, it aims to help move innovations from exploration into practical, scalable use across the bank.
As the Institute’s anchor academic partner, HKUST will contribute scientific expertise, specialist research, and access to talent, while also connecting HSBC with leading academic institutions.
Additional technology partners may also join the Institute in the future to support HSBC’s priorities.
“Technology is reshaping financial services at remarkable speed,” said David Liao, Co-Chief Executive, Asia Pacific and Middle East, HSBC.
“HSBC will explore the opportunities it creates thoughtfully and strategically, turning the most valuable innovations into better outcomes for our customers.”
Prof. Nancy Ip, President of HKUST, highlighted the broader impact of the partnership: “Equally important, the partnership will foster talent development, knowledge exchange, and innovation across disciplines and sectors. Together, we hope to contribute to the future of financial services while reinforcing Hong Kong’s role as a leading international centre for innovation and technology.”
According to HSBC, the Institute will help enhance the bank’s services and operations while informing its engineering and technology strategies. One immediate area of research and development will be strengthening defensive preparedness against new attempts at fraud in the agentic AI world.
The announcement follows HSBC’s broader AI expansion plans in Hong Kong. The bank recently disclosed plans to double its AI specialist workforce in the city from 150 to 300 employees over the next two to three years, reinforcing Hong Kong's role as a core market for the bank’s AI investment.
