Hong Kong Observatory may issue Standby Signal No. 1 as Saudel remnant intensifies

More showers and squally thunderstorms are expected across parts of Hong Kong tomorrow, with the public advised to stay updated on the latest weather information.

As the remnant of Saudel intensifies, the Hong Kong Observatory said it will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 later today (31 August 2026).

According to the present forecast, the remnant of Saudel is expected to move towards the vicinity of the southeastern coast of Hainan Island around this evening and gradually intensify into a tropical depression.

The low-pressure system is forecast to move across the northern part of the South China Sea and edge closer to the coast of eastern Guangdong tomorrow and on Wednesday (1 and 2 September).

Depending on its development and distance from Hong Kong, the Observatory will consider issuing the Standby Signal, No. 1 later. It will continue to closely monitor the system’s movement and local wind conditions, while assessing the need for higher tropical cyclone warning signals.

Under the combined influence of the weather system and the northeast monsoon, winds are expected to strengthen across Hong Kong tomorrow and on Wednesday.

There will also be more showers and squally thunderstorms over parts of the territory tomorrow. Members of the public are advised to pay attention to the latest weather information issued by the Observatory before travelling to school or work.
