While the emergency declaration in Serian has been lifted, very unhealthy air quality remains in parts of the state.
Malaysia's haze situation continues to affect air quality across the country, with 40 areas recording unhealthy air quality as of 7 September 2026.
According to the Department of Environment's (DOE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS), air quality is classified into five categories:
- Good: API 0-50
- Moderate: API 51-100
- Unhealthy: API 101-200
- Very unhealthy: API 201-300
- Hazardous: API above 300
At the time of the latest reading, Samarahan, Sarawak and IPD Serian, Sarawak was the only area recording very unhealthy air quality, with an API reading of around 233 and 256 respectively.
Meanwhile, the following areas recorded unhealthy air quality:
- Temerloh, Pahang: 116
- Kluang, Johor: 117
- Bandaraya Melaka, Melaka: 121
- Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan: 130
- Minden, Pulau Pinang: 133
- Limbang, Sarawak: 151
- Tangkak, Johor: 152
- Kimanis, Sabah: 152
- Kota Kinabalu, Sabah: 152
- Alor Gajah, Melaka: 153
- Taiping, Perak: 153
- Labuan, W.P. Labuan: 154
- Batu Pahat, Johor: 155
- Pegoh Ipoh, Perak: 155
- Segamat, Johor: 156
- Bukit Rambai, Melaka: 156
- Petaling Jaya, Selangor: 157
- Cheras, W.P. Kuala Lumpur: 157
- Banting, Selangor: 158
- Kuala Selangor, Selangor: 158
- Batu Muda, W.P. Kuala Lumpur: 159
- Klang, Selangor: 160
- Tanjung Malim, Perak: 160
- Seremban, Negeri Sembilan: 161

A further 25 areas recorded moderate air quality, while Kangar, Perlis recorded good air quality.

As mentioned above, the situation has been particularly severe in Sarawak in recent days.
Serian emergency lifted as haze in Sarawak eases
In Sarawak, authorities have lifted the state of emergency declared in the entire Serian Division after air quality improved from hazardous levels.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Ibrahim, had on Friday approved a state of emergency for the entire Serian Division in Sarawak following haze conditions that have reached hazardous levels.
The decision was made after considering advice from the Prime Minister, the Premier of Sarawak and relevant agencies monitoring air quality in the area.
The declaration is intended to enable the government to take necessary measures more effectively to protect the health and safety of people affected by the haze.
Authorities will continue to monitor air quality and the development of the haze situation, while implementing mitigation measures and providing health information and advice to the public.
Singapore sees haze from regional fires
Singapore has also been affected by the regional haze, although conditions have been less severe than those recorded in parts of Sarawak.
As of Sunday (6 September), the 24-hour PSI ranged from 73 to 87, within the moderate range, while 1-hour PM2.5 readings were between 38 and 66 µg/m³, falling within the normal to elevated bands.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said moderate to dense smoke plumes from fires in southern and central Sumatra, as well as West Kalimantan, continued to drift towards Singapore amid ongoing dry conditions.
While some showers are expected over Kalimantan, dry conditions are forecast in Singapore and the surrounding region in the coming days. With winds prevailing from the southeast or south, there remains a risk of smoke haze affecting Singapore if the fires persist.
The 24-hour PSI is forecast to range from high moderate to low unhealthy in the coming days.
Indonesia remains affected by hotspots and smoke haze
In Indonesia, scattered to widespread hotspots were detected across Kalimantan and Sumatra, with moderate to dense smoke plumes observed from hotspot clusters in many parts of Kalimantan and central and southern Sumatra.
The haze situation was also affecting neighbouring areas, with moderate to dense smoke haze observed over western Peninsular Malaysia and northern Borneo.
Many air quality stations in Borneo were reporting Unhealthy to Hazardous levels, while several stations in Sumatra and western Peninsular Malaysia were reporting Unhealthy air quality.
The regional haze situation remained difficult to assess fully due to cloud cover, which obscured some areas.
