Southeast Asia’s superapp Grab has announced its expansion into Taiwan through the acquisition of Delivery Hero’s foodpanda delivery business in Taiwan.
In an official statement, Grab's Group CEO and Co Founder Anthony Tan described the move as “a natural next step”, noting the company sees “a significant opportunity to grow the food and groceries delivery scene” in the market.
“Sharing a deep Asian heritage, we value the same traditions that define Taiwan’s rich food culture,” he said.
“We are here to be a long-term partner to Taiwan, and look forward to providing our AI-enabled products to help local merchants and delivery-partners grow with the digital AI economy.”
Grab's President and Chief Operating Officer, Alex Hungate, echoed the sentiment in a LinkedIn post, adding that the deal represents “the win-win-win” Grab pursues across all the markets it serves.
“Taiwan is a global culinary powerhouse. By bringing together Grab’s AI-powered platform and the scale of Taiwan’s leading food delivery network, we want to help 台灣美食 (Taiwanese cuisine) thrive in an increasingly digital economy,” he said.
Niklas Östberg, CEO and Co-Founder of Delivery Hero, also expressed appreciation for the Taiwan team: “The foodpanda team in Taiwan has built a fantastic business and we thank them for their hard work. This divestment is a key first step in our ongoing strategic review.”
Grab’s entry into Taiwan will mark its first food delivery expansion outside of Southeast Asia. Following the acquisition, Grab will have a presence across 21 cities in Taiwan.
The deal is expected to close in the second half of 2026. Both Grab and foodpanda have stated they will aim to maintain a high level of service for all stakeholders throughout this process.
Until the acquisition is completed, Delivery Hero will continue operating as foodpanda Taiwan as usual. Following the closure of the deal, Delivery Hero will provide transition support services to ensure the local community remains well-supported as operations move to the Grab platform.
