閱讀中文版本

The United Kingdom has pipped the United States for international bragging rights for world-class tertiary education for 2019.

For the second consecutive year, University of Oxford and University of Cambridge have topped the list – coming in first and second respectively.

California-based Stanford University came in third, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in fourth. In fact, seven of the top 10 positions were occupied by US universities, with Ivy League establishments Harvard (sixth), Princeton (seventh) and Yale (eighth) all featuring.

The highest ranked Asian university was the Beijing-based Tsinghua University coming in at 22 on the global rankings – rising an impressive eight places on the previous year – and just ahead of the National University of Singapore (23).

Tsinghua University has become the first Chinese tertiary institution to top the Asian rankings. China has improved its place in the global rankings overall, “driven by improvements in citation impact” (the usage of scholarly works), according to the Times Higher Education, which published the rankings.

Hong Kong had two entries in the top 50. The University of Hong Kong came in 36th spot while the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was ranked 41st.

Also in Asia, Japan has overtaken the UK as the nation with the most universities with 103 (the UK has 98).

The top 20 was, in fact, comprised solely of US and UK entries apart from ETH Zurich, in Switzerland (11). University of Toronto was the highest Canadian entry in 21st place. Despite civil unrest in Paris over the past year, France has a university (Paris Science et Lettres) in the top 50 for the first time since 2011.
