Former SVP of ST Marine fined S$300k over bribery issues

Ong Teck Liam, former Singapore Technologies Marine (ST Marine) financial controller and senior vice-president, has been fined S$300,000 for conspiring with four fellow senior executives to facilitate the payment of bribes to employees of ST Marine's customers. The group had claimed a total of S$48,887 in this process, according to The Business Times.

Ong pleaded guilty on Feb 19, 2016 to 10 charges under the Penal Code and a further 108 similar charges were taken into consideration for sentencing. Failure to pay the fine would cause her 30 weeks in jail.

In a statement, ST Engineering said: “ST Engineering is committed to maintaining high standards of corporate governance and recognises that fraud is detrimental to the reputation of the ST Engineering Group. ST Engineering does not condone fraud, including corruption and bribery, and is fully committed to proactively mitigating the risk of its occurrence.”

As of now, including Ong, seven other former ST Marine executives have been convicted. From 2000 to 2011, the seven used "entertainment expenses" to cover up close to S$24.9 million in bribes, according to The Business Times' report.
