The Schneider Electric Country HR Director – Philippines believes HR is at its best when it helps people grow, feel heard, and prepare for what is next.
For Karen Angeli Diaz (pictured above), Country HR Director – Philippines, Schneider Electric, a great day at work is one where she can serve, support, and positively impact others. Whether she is guiding a career conversation, helping someone unpack their thoughts, or simply making their day a little better, these moments reaffirm why she remains passionate about HR.
A people-focused leader with extensive experience across performance management, career development, employee engagement, employee relations, and organisational development, Diaz is committed to creating inclusive, high-performing cultures where individuals feel valued and empowered to thrive.
In this interview ahead of her session at Transform Talent Philippines 2026, Diaz sits down with Mary Ann Bundukin to discuss why listening with empathy is central to employee engagement, how meaningful conversations can energise leaders, and why HR must go beyond filling roles to build a ready pipeline of future talent.
Q What does a great day at work look like for you, and how does it remind you why you love HR?
A great day at work is one where I can serve, support, and positively impact others. HR is a profession rooted in care and compassion, and I believe we are called to help people. Whether it's guiding a career conversation, unpacking thoughts, or simply making someone’s day a little better, those moments remind me why I am passionate about HR and the difference we can make in people’s lives.
Q What is one strategy you've found most effective in keeping employees engaged and committed?
"Listening and hearing them."
Employees would always want to know that their voices are heard and that they matter.
More than actions, sometimes people just need someone who will listen to them with empathy. When employees feel valued, engagement and commitment follow.
Q In three words, how would you describe your leadership philosophy?
People-focused. Authentic. Empowering.
Q Could you tell us one thing about you that people might be surprised to know?
People might be surprised that I may come into a room not having all the answers and even the energy to have people discussion.
I may enter a room empty, but often walk out inspired and energised from a meaningful conversation.
Q As a speaker at #TransformTalentPH, what is the #1 call to action you hope for attendees to take away from your session?
In a transforming world, HR will always have a role to play. My call to action is simple: don't just fill roles, build readiness. The future belongs to organisations that proactively develop talent, strengthen their leadership bench, and prepare people for opportunities before they arise.
“Build your next leader before you need one.”
