Faces of HR: Anglo American's Audrey Ng on why meaningful conversations shape future-ready teams

The HR leader says genuine conversations, care, and respect guide her approach, helping employees feel supported and grow alongside the organisation.

For Audrey Ng (pictured above), Head of People & Organisation (Global), Anglo American, a good day at work can be a simple one. It is a day where she has had genuine and invigorating conversations with colleagues, and where those conversations make a difference to people’s lives and enrich their career journey.

Her approach to HR is grounded in being personable in how she reaches out to others. By showing care and respect, she seeks to better understand how her team can support people’s needs and aspirations.

Speaking to Mary Ann Bundukin ahead of #TalentMobility, she highlights how the world of work is changing, with shifting trends and new generations entering the workforce with different lived experiences. To remain relevant, she believes organisations must continuously learn from one another, adapt to new ways of thinking, and evolve how they work. Only by doing so, she says, can teams not just survive, but truly thrive as they move forward together.

Q What does a “good day” at work look like for you, that kind of day that reminds you why you love what you do in HR?

A ‘good day’ at work can be a simple one where I’ve had genuine and invigorating conversations with colleagues, and those chats make a difference in people’s lives and enrich their career journey. This stems from my belief in being personable in my approach to reach out to show care and respect for colleagues, to better understand how my team can support people’s needs and aspirations.

Every conversation and every request that comes our way is treated with the utmost respect and while they might not land on a straightforward outcome right off the bat, our principle is to ensure that we always focus on the employees as part of the organisation journey so that our people grow along with the business.

Q
People often turn to HR for support, but who or what helps you recharge and stay inspired?

This is an easy one — my loved ones. My husband and two boys are who I go back to at the end of the day, and I can share with them my triumphs and worries. It is true what people say, 'A problem shared is a problem halved, A joy shared is a joy doubled'.

Q
If you could describe your leadership philosophy in three words, what would they be, and how do these guide your approach to developing mobile, future-ready teams?

Rather than three words, I’m guided by three phrases that the team developed together — 'Think smart', 'Lead strong', and 'Move fast together'. They shape how I help teams stay agile, empowered, and deeply collaborative so that we are ready for the future.

Q As a speaker at #TalentMobility, what is the key message you hope attendees will take away from your session?

The world is changing, trends are shifting, and new generations are entering the workforce with vastly different lived experiences. To stay relevant, we must continuously learn from one another, adapt to new ways of thinking, and evolve how we work. Only by doing so can we not just survive — but truly thrive as we move forward together.
