This initiative aims to reduce childcare costs for families in order to boost birth rates.

China has announced the implementation of a nationwide childcare subsidy programme to provide financial support to families, as shared on 28 July 2025.

Starting 1 January 2025, parents will receive an annual subsidy of RMB3,600 for each child under the age of three.

Children born before 1 January 2025, who are still under three years old, will be eligible to receive the subsidy on a pro-rated basis.

This initiative aims to reduce childcare costs for families, and foster a more birth-friendly social environment.

To apply for the childcare subsidy, one of the parents or guardians must submit an application in accordance with the regulations at the child’s registered residence.

To cope with the aging population and to increase the birth rate, China launched 13 targeted birth support measures last October. These measures include strengthening the protection of maternity insurance schemes for insured female employees, improving maternity leave policies, increasing the accessibility of childcare services, among others.
