AMD Singapore looks to expand its workforce steadily over the coming months

This, it hopes to do, by growing its R&D footprint, as well as developing local skillsets towards high-performance computing (HPC) capabilities in Singapore.

Advanced Micro Devices in Singapore, also known as AMD Singapore, is looking to expand its workforce  in the nation steadily over the coming months with a view to focused on product development.

The expanded team is expected to focus on high-performance computing (HPC) activities, including product and hardware development, device analysis, data science, and artificial intelligence research.

"These new products and hardware are part of AMD’s product portfolio that will address new markets, and strategies to accelerate data centre growth and deliver pervasive AI leadership," said the company in a media statement.

This development sees the processor specialist investing more than US$50mn to expand and upskill the local workforce and upgrade their capabilities over the next three years.

To be carried out in partnership with Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), AMD will look to develop local talent with critical semiconductor R&D skills through:

  • Mentorship,
  • Overseas training stints, and
  • Post-graduate research studies and projects with leading universities in Singapore.

AMD Singapore was founded in 1984 as a high-volume test manufacturing facility, and has since transitioned into a full-fledged product development center focused on an ecosystem of new product introduction (NPI).

Since 2016, AMD Singapore has significantly expanded its local R&D operations. As such, around 85% of AMD Singapore’s workforce works on innovation in HPC, graphics, and visualisation technologies within product development and NPI ecosystem teams.
