Chief Secretary for Administration, Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, wrote on his blog yesterday that about there were 35,500 unemployed people aged between 15 and 24 during the Dec-Feb period. Of these, 10,400 were fresh university graduates. He called the situation "concerning".

The city's jobless rate rose to 7.2% during the previous three-month period, the highest since 2004.

Cheung wrote that it is more difficult for fresh graduates to find a job in the current economic environment due to their lack of working experience and relevant qualifications. He welcomed local young people who are ambitious and willing to serve the society to join the government. He also urged young people to expand their horizon and consider opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.

He believed that the mass Covid vaccination programme rollout can hasten the city's economic recovery, with hopes that it will revive the gloomy job market in return.
