3 workers killed at MRT accident site [UPDATED]

An accident at a MRT work site near Kota Damansara has claimed the life of three Bangladeshi construction workers.

At 8.30pm on August 18, a span of the MRT guideway had dislodged from its piers and fallen as construction was being carried out to build a parapet for the guideway.

The first body was recovered this morning at 2.34am, and has been identified as Mohammad Elahi Hossain. The other two workers,  Mohammad Faruk Khan and Mohammad Alauddin Mollik, were found at 1.35pm. All three workers were trapped under the fallen span, which is weighs about 650 tons and is 38 metres in length.

MRT Corp said in a media statement the Bangladesh High Commission is in the process of contacting the families of the workers, and arrangements will be made to repatriate the bodies back.

"Although investigations are underway, MRT Corp assumes full responsibility for the incident," Datuk Wira Azhar Abdul Hamid, its CEO, said.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the workers over this unfortunate incident."
