The top career choices of young Singaporeans

Most young Singaporeans say they want to teach when they grow up, but that the coolest place to work would be Google.

According to the ninth annual children's career survey by Adecco, children in Singapore say their dream jobs also include becoming a doctor, singer, actor or police officer, respectively.

But while these jobs rank the highest, they might not be the "coolest". The social media effect of the internet generation has meant jobs such as "celebrity" and "pop star" would be the best jobs in the world - although one 14-year-old girl said her best job would be "working at Google".

Another nine-year-old girl listed "internet developer" as her idea of the coolest job. This was followed rather distantly by wanting to become a pilot or the president.

And while children dream big, it became clear in the survey that most children are more influenced by their interests, rather than by money.

Additionally, they are aware of the need for work-life balance. When asked "What is more important – to make lots of money or to spend time with your family?", 73% said they would prefer to spend time with family over making money "because time is precious" and "family comes first".

“It is heartening to see how much situational awareness and civic-mindedness there is in the younger generation of Singapore,” said Femke Hellemons, country manager at Adecco Singapore. "Our youngsters have a keen eye on the world around them, strong ideas on how to make it better and a genuine interest in giving back to society."

The survey also asked children where they would prefer to live once they grow up, apart from Singapore, and the top locations included Australia, USA, the UK and South Korea.
