The strategy includes gig hubs, digital literacy, and an ASEAN exchange programme, all aimed at empowering Malaysia’s rural youth for future-ready careers.
Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has proposed a new strategy to uplift rural youth in Malaysia, with a strong emphasis on digital literacy, education, skills training, and adaptability.
Speaking at the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development’s (KKDW) monthly assembly in Putrajaya on 8 May 2025, and cited by MalayMail, DPM Zahid shared plans to set up remote work hubs in rural areas, appoint youth representatives, and launch a regional exchange programme to give young people more exposure and experience.
As reported by MalayMail, the proposed strategy centres around three core initiatives:
- Formation of Rural Gig Hubs to generate new employment opportunities.
- Appointment of Rural Youth Ambassadors (Duta Belia Desa) to represent the voices of young people in rural communities.
- Launch of ASEAN Rural Youth Exchange Programme to broaden youths' knowledge and experience.
To drive this vision, DPM Zahid called on KKDW to bring all relevant agencies together under a unified platform or committee, ensuring coordinated action and long-term impact.
He emphasised that rural youth are a critical national asset and will play a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s future, especially as young people are expected to make up over 70% of the national workforce in the coming years.
Amid growing global uncertainties, DPM Zahid noted the urgency of empowering rural youth to overcome limitations and avoid being left behind. He stressed that giving them the tools to thrive internationally is essential to national progress, urging the ministry to act with focus and clarity to bring this vision to life.
"I want Malaysia’s rural youth to explore the world, transcend boundaries, and compete confidently on the global stage," he concluded.
