Hong Kong announces special traffic and cross-boundary arrangements for National Day

Measures include road closures and traffic diversions on Hong Kong Island and in Kowloon, marine traffic controls, and additional immigration clearance counters.

To facilitate flag-raising ceremonies celebrating the 77^th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, as well as the National Day Fireworks Display on 1 October (Thursday), Hong Kong will implement a series of special traffic and cross-boundary arrangements.

To accommodate the flag-raising ceremonies at Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai on the morning of 1 October, road closures and traffic diversions will be implemented in phases along Expo Drive, Lung Wo Road, Causeway Road, and nearby areas from the early hours of 30 September. Metered parking spaces and nearby pick-up and drop-off areas will also be suspended.

The National Day Fireworks Display will light up the sky over Victoria Harbour at 8pm on 1 October. Road closures around Golden Bauhinia Square will begin at 4pm. From 6.30pm, road closures and traffic diversions will be implemented in phases across Wan Chai, Central, and the Eastern District.

Tsim Sha Tsui and Hung Hom, which are also popular locations for viewing the fireworks, will see road closures and traffic diversions implemented in phases from 5pm onwards.

Members of the public are advised to pay attention to the latest special traffic arrangements announced by the Transport Department and use public transport when travelling to affected areas. The actual implementation of traffic arrangements and crowd safety management measures will depend on traffic and crowd conditions.

Marine traffic controls for fireworks display

Meanwhile, the Marine Department (MD) will strictly enforce marine traffic controls for the fireworks display on 1 October.

The MD will establish a Closed Area in the waters off the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai from 2pm to about 10pm on the day.

A Restricted Area will also be established in Central Harbour from 7pm to about 9pm. Other than authorised vessels, no vessels will be allowed to enter the Closed Area or Restricted Area. Scheduled ferry services with permission may continue operating until 7:40pm.

Public landing steps No. 1 to 4 at Kowloon Public Pier will be temporarily closed from 6pm to about 9pm, while public landing steps No. 5 and 6 will be closed from 6pm to about midnight. Other public landing steps within the Restricted Area will be temporarily closed from 6.30pm to about 9pm.

Heavy passenger traffic expected during Golden Week

Meanwhile, the Immigration Department (ImmD) estimates that around 6.31mn passengers will pass through Hong Kong’s land boundary control points (BCPs) during the Mainland’s upcoming National Day Golden Week, from 1 to 7 October.

Passenger traffic at the Lo Wu Control Point, Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point, and Shenzhen Bay Control Point is expected to be heavy.

To cope with the anticipated passenger traffic during outbound and inbound peak periods, the ImmD will open additional counters, temporary counters, and vehicle clearance kiosks at land BCPs in advance to strengthen immigration clearance services.

The ImmD advises passengers travelling through land boundary control points to plan their journeys in advance, avoid busy periods, and keep track of radio and television broadcasts for the latest traffic conditions at the various control points.
