11 outrageous Joan Rivers quotes about money, happiness and work

Legendary comedienne Joan Rivers passed away yesterday at the age of 81, after complications from a routine throat surgery.

"It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers," her daughter Melissa Rivers said in a statement. "My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon."

Rivers was best known as a sharp-tongued comedienne who held back nothing when making fun of celebrities, Hollywood culture and herself.

While her best zingers are a little too R-rated for this website, we thought we'd share a few of her one-liners about life, love, money, success and getting old - because isn't that all we ever worry about?

1. “People say that money is not the key to happiness, but I always figured if you have enough money, you can have a key made.”

2. "I succeed by saying what everyone else is thinking."

3. "That comes with age: Knowing its their problem and not mine."

4. "I don't mince words, I don't hold back. What are you gonna do to me? Fire me? It's been done. Take away my show? Done! Not invite me to the Vanity Fair party? I've never been invited!"

5. “There are many self-help books by Ph.D.s, but I hold a different degree: an I.B.T.I.A.—I’ve Been Through It All. This degree comes not on parchment but gauze, and it entitles me to tell you that there is a way to get through any misfortune.”

6. “You know you’re getting old when work is a lot less fun and fun is a lot more work.”

7. "What we do is not a job. It sounds so stupid. What we do is a calling, my dear. We make people happy. It's a calling."

8. "I enjoy life when things are happening. I don't care if it's good things or bad things. That means you're alive."

9. "I have become my own version of an optimist. If I can't make it through one door, I'll go through another door—or I'll make a door. Something terrific will come no matter how dark the present."

10. "Life is very tough. If you don't laugh, it's tough."

11. "Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is God's gift, that's why we call it the present."
