Up the ranks: Marwan ElGamal takes on role of Group Head of People and Culture at CompAsia

In his new role, his first priority is to champion employee experience (EX), positioning it as a strategic advantage for the group — this would mean becoming EX-driven.

Marwan ElGamal has joined CompAsia, a device lifecycle company, as its new Group Head of People and Culture effective March 2024.

In conversation with HRO, the leader said his core responsibilities here involve steering the group's HR function, with a primary focus on aligning its people strategy with the rapidly evolving strategic needs and goals of the business, "especially considering the complexities of operating across eight countries."

He elaborates: "A key commitment of mine is to create an exceptional workplace experience that empowers our people to feel valued and grow with a long-term future with us, while also making our company a magnet for the top talent in the industry. All within an environment that is increasingly dependent on technology."

In his new role, Marwan's first priority is to champion employee experience (EX), positioning it as a strategic advantage for CompAsia — this would mean becoming EX-driven, by dedicating all its efforts and resources to the critical "moments that matter" in employees' journeys with the group.

For example, talent acquisition, IT, and operations teams to jointly plan, develop, and implement an enhanced onboarding experience.

"This ensures every new joiner feels valued from day one and has all the resources needed to be engaged and productive."

Complementing the focus on EX, a critical priority for the HR team is to evolve into a more tech-savvy and data-driven function. This shift will lead to:

  • A fully digital work experience: Implementing digital processes across HR to enhance efficiency and modernise how the group works.
  • Data excellence over process excellence: Using AI to improve decision-making with better data insights, moving beyond just optimising processes.
  • Automated HR solutions: Increasing efficiency by automating routine tasks, allowing the team to focus on higher-impact work.
  • Enhanced HR capabilities through technology: Employing tools such as workflow automation and data analysis to enhance HR's role and effectiveness.

Marwan will report to CompAsia's CEO, Julius Lim.

Marwan expressed: "I'm really excited because I have full support from our CEO and the Executive Committee. They're fully behind the people agenda, which makes it much easier to implement changes.

"The energy of our HR team is incredible, too; they're eager to make things happen. This, combined with the spirit of our people, truly inspires me. I'm looking forward to making CompAsia a world-class workplace — a place where everyone wants to be, driven by our actions and ways of working."
