1,701 investigation papers were opened against 444 Malaysian employers in 2023

These involved various offences under the Employment Act 1955, and the Minimum Wage Order under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011.

In 2023, 1,701 investigation papers were opened by the Peninsular Malaysia Labour Department (JTKSM) against 444 employers inspected during the Integrated Operations conducted last year.

According to JTKSM Director-General Kamal Pardi, as cited in Bernama, these involved various offences under the Employment Act 1955, the Employees’ Minimum Standards of Housing, Accommodations and Amenities Act 1990, as well as Minimum Wage Order under the National Wages Consultative Council Act 2011.

As shared by Bernama, out of all the papers opened, 421 cases proceeded to prosecution, yielding fines amounting to RM504,836. Additionally, 848 cases were settled through compounding, with a total value of RM4,536,000.

Meanwhile, from January to March this year, a total of 240 operations have been conducted involving 240 employers nationwide, resulting in 370 investigation papers being opened. Of this, 77 cases were prosecuted with fines amounting to RM1,000 while roughly 35 cases were compounded involving compound offers totalling RM425,000.

The two-day operation also involved various departments and agencies under the Ministry of Human Resources, including the Occupational Safety and Health Department, Social Security Organisation, HRD Corp, and the ministry’s Regulatory and Enforcement Branch.

As of noon 22 April 2024 (Monday), 26 employers in various sectors, such as manufacturing, services, retail and wholesale, and telecommunications, had been inspected, Bernama reported.
