As more personal mobile devices are brought into the workplace, IT and its security issues has been identified as one of the biggest causes of stress in the office.

One in eight Gen Y Indian employees are combating stress at work by bringing their own mobile devices, with a slightly higher percentage (85%) receiving a mobile device from their employer.

According to the New of Life study by VMWare, stress caused by mobile devices and IT issues (40%) is more than that caused by bureaucracy (35%) and workload (31%).

The younger workforce was also found to be happier when allowed to use their own devices at work, Hindustan Times reported. This year, the percentage of those who felt they were more comfortable when working on their own device (78%) was more than last year’s (70%).

“The research results highlight the pressing need for organisations to change and find the right balance between policies and how employees prefer to work,” the study said.

However, respondents said the merging of their ‘work life’ and ‘personal life’ through technology had resulted in work-life balance challenges.

Eighty-one percent of respondents said they work from home, while 71% work on vacation and 57% when in commute.

Vinod Krishnan, director of advanced technologies at VMware India and SAARC, said this mobility may add complex security issues.

“Over the last year, we’ve seen new products and categories emerge which are presenting unique complexities and risks  for organisations who want to protect their company data and avoid the leakage of confidential information,” Krishnan said.
