On 18 June at the Paris Air Show, the winners of this year’s World Airline Awards were announced – with the gong going to Qatar Airways as the top airline in the world. It is the fifth year the airline has won the coveted prize.

As has been the case in recent years, the top 10 was heavily dominated by Asian and Middle Eastern airlines.

Cathay Pacific continued to enjoy something of a mini-comeback, rising from sixth to fourth.

Based on comprehensive research from Skytrax, collating more than 20 million responses from over 100 countries, last year’s champion, Singapore Airlines, dropped to second, while All Nippon Airlines retained third spot. Emirates dropped one spot to fifth.

It proved to be a very good year for Qatar Airways which also won world’s best business class, best business class seat, and best Middle Eastern airline.

A popular feature has been the airline’s new business class seats that were unveiled in 2017, along with its first-ever double-bed in business class. The airline also boasts a face-to-face, so-called party-of-four configuration.

Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways’ group chief executive, hailed the results as a “proud moment” for the airline.

Qantas was a big improver gaining altitude from 11th up to eighth globally. Regionally, the Australian national carrier took out best airline and best business class in the APAC division, while Air New Zealand was awarded best premium economy and best cabin cleanliness.

Other highlights were Singapore Airlines winning best cabin crew and best first-class, while Japan Airlines won best economy class. Emirates was awarded best in-flight entertainment and AirAsia was named best low-cost carrier.
