Up the Ranks: Willie Cheng joins Asia Miles as head of people

Willie Cheng has joined Asia Miles starting December 1 as head of people. In his new role, his primary responsibility is to oversee people functions and develop total solutions across the HR platform. He will be working on formulating and implementing people strategies and initiatives in alignment with the company’s objectives.

He is based at the company headquarters in Hong Kong and will report directly to the CEO of Asia Miles.

In his daily work, additional key areas include talent acquisition, development & retention, performance reviews & appraisals, rewards, policies & processes, staff engagement initiatives & activities, as well as building and strengthening Asia Miles’ corporate culture.

Talking about his current projects and priorities for the upcoming year, Cheng said: “I am currently working on initiating the Alignment and Engagement Survey which aims to gather staff opinions on the areas to work on in order to make Asia Miles a better place to work at.

My priority is to integrate different people initiatives to ensure the business needs are met.”

Meeting those business needs is also one of the biggest challenges Cheng faces in his daily work. He said: “The one challenge that keeps me up at night is to ensure whether we have the right quality and quantity of talents in our business to improve the organisational effectiveness and meet the corporate needs.”

Cheng has over 16 years’ experience within the people spectrum, related to the Swire Group, including John Swire & Sons, Cathay Pacific and Cathay Dragon. He began his career as a management trainee with Cathay Pacific Catering Services in 1996.

He holds an MSc in strategic human resources management from Hong Kong Baptist University, as well as a business administration degree from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a number of professional coaching and mentoring qualifications, including the Associate Certificate of Coaching.
