The median salaries for those working in the creative, digital and marketing industry fell in 2013 despite many businesses increasing their investment in the sector.
Based on font’s Market Pulse, Annual Salary Report, which surveyed 2,563 respondents in Singapore, male employees in the communications sector saw the largest decrease in 2013, with salaries dropping by 39% for men. As for women employees, those in digital and marketing assistant or coordination roles saw the biggest median decrease at 25%.
On the other end of the spectrum, men in studio, traffic and production roles saw the biggest salary increase last year of 43%, while women in online and digital marketing roles receiving a median salary increase of 27%.
Jacqui Barratt, managing director of font, said the downward trend could be a result of more jobs being created at the junior level, which drove down the median salaries.
However, as roles become more specialised, font expects demand to outstrip supply, reversing the trend and causing higher salaries in 2014.
“The skill shortage in Singapore’s creative, marketing and digital sector will only grow as employment regulations are tightened – we expect to see salaries rise in response,” Anna Clark-Hall, Singapore country manager for font, said.
The report also found there is still a salary gap between men and women across all four sectors in Singapore. While women are willing to jump ship for a median salary increase of 13%, men will only do the same for a 15% increase.
That, coupled with the finding that women are leaving their roles after gaining nine to 10 years of experience to care for their families, could be the biggest reasons behind the pay disparity.
“Rather than a higher salary, many women are looking for roles that will allow them to fulfil duties both at home and at the workplace,” the report stated.
“As it becomes more difficult and more costly to fill roles in Singapore, we expect employers to be more open to flexible work arrangements that will keep women in their roles.”
