The one quality 87% of Millennials want in a job

Want to attract and retain the Millennial generation? Constantly develop them.

This is, at least, according to a new report by Gallup titled ‘How Millennials Want to Work and Live’.

In fact, 87% of Millennials in the study rated “professional or career growth and development opportunities” as important to them in a job.

Furthermore, in terms of applying to a job, 59% of Millennials surveyed said that opportunities to learn and grow were most important to them.

These findings are also significant because they highlighted one of the most fundamental differences between Millennials and other generations in the workplace.

Only 44% of professionals from Gen X and 41% of Baby Boomers valued development opportunities as much as them.

The study also found a significant room for improvement with regards to growing

However, despite the fact that Millennials are eager to learn and grow, only 39% strongly agree that they learned something new in the past 30 days that they can use to do their jobs better.

Other findings from the study that highlight how Millennials are not getting the chance to learn include:

  • 29% of Millennials strongly agree that they feel comfortable discussing their life outside of work with their manager.
  • Only one-third strongly agree that their most recent learning opportunity at work was “well worth” their time.
  • Less than 50% of Millennials strongly agree that they have had opportunities to learn and grow in the past year.
