Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last Friday on his Facebook he will be taking two months off following the birth of his daughter.
“This is a very personal decision, and I’ve decided to take 2 months of paternity leave when our daughter arrives,” he said in a Facebook post.
The reason behind his decision is simple.
“Studies show that when working parents take time to be with their newborns, outcomes are better for the children and families,” Zuckerberg wrote in the post.
This is a sharp contrast with what Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer did.
Mayer announced in September that she planned to return to work two weeks after giving birth.
While a New York University professor Scott Galloway said on Bloomberg Surveillance television show that “if she hadn’t announced she was pregnant with twins, she’d be out of a job within six months,” , two weeks of maternity leave is still way too little time off for women to return from giving birth.
Two months for Zuckerberg may sound like a long time, but the truth is the tech giant offers its US employees four months of paid maternity and paternity leave, so Zuckerberg is actually taking only half of what he is entitled to.
In Hong Kong, thank to the new employment ordinance, fathers are entitled to three days of statutory paternity leave.
Around the globe 70 countries already offer paid paternity leave. In recent months, several tech companies have shown their commitment towards providing a family-friendly workplace.
For instance, Virgin Group and Netfix are now offering up to a year of paid maternity and paternity leave.
Amazon also recently announced 20 weeks of leave for birth mothers, with the ability for employees to share six weeks of paid leave with a partner.
