Malaysia's SMEs benefit from digital literacy under SITEC programme

The Selangor Information Technology and E-Commerce Council (SITEC) programme supporting 300 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) helped contribute to sales recorded over RM4.8 million last year as reported by Bernama.

Selangor State Senior Executive Councillor Datuk Teng Chang Khim said the sales were generated via 33,000 orders through the SITEC Online 100 and Apps 100 programmes.

At the launch of the third edition of the Malaysia Top E-Commerce Merchant Awards (Top ECM 2018) at i-City on 28 June, he said: "We are glad to have played an essential role in promoting the growth of e-commerce and the digital economy in Selangor."

Established in June 2015, SITEC aimed to drive e-commerce and entrepreneurship through four key thrusts, which include:

  • SITEC Apps 100
  • SITEC Online 100
  • Selangor Digital Creative Centre (SDCC)
  • E-Commerce Education

The programme has run for over four years, training SMEs in Selangor to improve their digital economy literacy. This is to develop the state as the regional trading hub for e-commerce and uplift the startup ecosystem by facilitating digitalisation and e-commerce education efforts.

As of December 2017, SITEC has:

  • On-boarded 300 Selangor brick-and-mortar merchants to sell online via Online 100
  • Produced 300 mobile apps for these Online 100 merchants
  • Reached out to over 80,000 people in related areas locally and overseas
  • Ran 58 e-commerce and startup educational classes
  • Facilitated Online 100 merchants in generating RM 7,300,000 in gross merchandise value
