More than 90% of local university graduates are able to secure employment within half a year of graduating.

The inaugural Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings by Thomson Reuters also found the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technical University (NTU) to be among the best universities in Asia.

NUS came in second in Asia with a score of 77.5, just behind Japan’s University of Tokyo (78.3), while NTU came in 11th place with (59.4). Globally, NUS placed 29th and NTU 86th.

NUS scored 92.3 for international outlook, 87.2 for research and 77.4 for industry income. Meanwhile, NTU scored highest in industry income (99.5), international outlook (90.5) and research (66.9). Other areas the universities were scored on included teaching and citations.

James Nuben, head of taxation at AsiaBiz Services, said “quality education produces quality graduates who eventually join the workforce”.

“Amid efforts to reduce our foreign worker intake, it is particularly important to develop our home-grown professionals, managers, and executives, so that they have better access to high value jobs on one hand, and make significant contributions to the economy on the other,” Nuben said.

He added future local tertiary institutions should use NUS and NTU as benchmarks when it comes to education.

“Not only will an improved curriculum bode well for Singapore as a centre for education in the East, but it will also increase the Republic’s pull factor as a major talent hub in the region,” he said.
