It might not be among the 10 best companies for LGBT companies in Hong Kong, but Google still holds a dear place in the hearts of young talent in the country.
The tech giant led the list of Universum’s Hong Kong Top 100 IDEAL Employers student survey, emerging as the most attractive employer for business students.
Google couldn’t manage the same feat among engineering students, however, where the HKSAR Government remained the most coveted employer for another year.
Polling more than 7,200 participating students from Hong Kong’s main universities, the survey found the HKSAR Government was, in fact, the second most desired company to work for business students, followed by HSBC and Cathay Pacific Airways.
While Google ranked as the second hottest company for those in the engineering faculty, Cathay Pacific Airways and Apple rounded up the top four.
The survey also delved into the career aspirations and preferences of these young talent.
With reports of staff in Hong Kong being dissatisfied with their working hours, it was unsurprising to find a work-life balance was the most important career goal among all students (67%), followed by getting a stable job.
The survey stated that Hong Kong’s young talent “has become more closely aligned to international trends.”
Owing to this, people and cultural factors are being held in higher regard than an employer’s reputation or traditional remuneration and advancement motivators.
Echoing this observation, ‘a friendly work environment’ was found to be the most sought after employer attribute among business students (up from second in 2014) and engineering students (up from fourth in 2014).
The second and third most attractive employer attributes, again regardless of type of student, were ‘professional training and development’ opportunities, closely followed by employers perceived to be ‘a good reference for future career’.
“The results from Hong Kong’s generation-Y data this year reinforces that Millennial trends in Hong Kong are intrinsic,” Rachele Focardi, senior vice president of employer branding and talent strategy – APAC, Universum, said.
“Students no longer want to join an industry, brand or opportunity, they want to join an environment.”
