Disciplinary action taken against 31,230 civil servants in Malaysia since 2010

Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, revealed that between 2010 and July 2016, a total of 31,230 civil servants had disciplinary actions taken against them.

According to Astro Awani, she was replying to a question from Er Teck Hwa (DAP-Bakri) in the Dewan Rakyat. Azalina’s reply text was read by Deputy Education Minister, Datuk P. Kamalanathan.

Azalina added that from the total, 5,778 had their services terminated.

“Another 152 were demoted and would not be considered for promotion for 48 months, while 1,168 had their salary cut and would not be considered for promotion for 36 months,” she said.

She further said that from the total, 2,369 civil servants had their salary increment halted and would not be considered for promotion for 30 months. While another 4,295 were fined seven days of their emolument and would not be considered for promotion for 18 months, Astro Awani reported.

In other news on government staffers, Astro Awani has also reported that Malaysia will study the suitability of separating the internet from the work computers in its public service sector.

Citing the Chief Secretary to the Government, Tan Sri Ali Hamsa, he said that while no policy would be made on the matter currently, if it concerns security, “the threat should not only be looked at from the aspect of the internet but also the social media too,” as telling Bernama.

He was asked to comment on the development in Singapore which had started to separate the internet from the work computer of civil servants for security reasons.

“We will look at the modus operandi in Singapore first,” he added. If it was to be implemented in the public service in Malaysia, various aspects must first be looked into, he said.
