A huge number of local employees feel employers are demanding more of them now than five years ago.

According to a report by Randstad, nine in 10 Singapore employees believe there has been an increase in emphasis on education, experience and social and digital skills.

“Organisations are becoming flatter and leaner, so employees need to be high-performing and wear several hats. Business leaders value employees who have varied skills and can jump on board to assist when the need arises,” Michael Smith, country director for Randstad Singapore, said.

The Workmonitor Mobility Index also found 80% of local respondents expect their job will continue to be more demanding in the next five years, with 47% worried they will not be able to meet future requirements.

Therefore, Smith said it is important employees are given opportunities to tap on existing training programmes, sign up for external courses or take on a mentor.

The majority of respondents to the survey agreed they themselves are responsible for making sure their skills remain relevant to their jobs, but 91% believing this onus also falls on their bosses.

“By providing employees with relevant training to help advance their career, companies will not only fill the gaps for in-demand skills and build a leadership pipeline for the next phase of business growth, but also keep employees satisfied and engaged, lowering the staff turnover rate,” Smith said.

Unfortunately, the survey also revealed 56% of local employees are not satisfied with their bosses – the highest in the world – with a quarter having changed jobs in the last three months.
