Corporate training is necessary in many organisations, but companies which don’t actively engage their employees may find the purpose of the training falling flat.

Many managers struggle to keep staff motivated about training sessions, particularly when employees feel these sessions hamper their individual responsibilities or prevent them from achieving their daily business targets and goals.

So what can HR do to help motivate the workforce and make training appealing? Patrick Lew, leader for learning and talent development at APAC and Japan at NetApp Singapore, says you need to show them how these sessions can actually help them do these tasks more effectively.

“Looking at the self-interest and work requirements of employees when planning training sessions can help in motivating employees to learn better,” he says.

At  Employee Effectiveness 2014, Lew will be speaking in detail about employee pro-activeness levels for learning initiatives.

He adds L&D leaders can design learning strategies with content tailored to employees’ roles and responsibilities, which will help improve the effectiveness of the course and the ability of employees to relate to the material.

“Adopting a flexible work arrangement and looking at learning availability of staff also helps in ensuring their learning doesn’t interfere with their routine tasks”.
