University of Hong Kong has emerged as Asia’s second best university this year.

According to the QS University Rankings: Asia, the university rose from its third place in 2014, beating the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (3rd), and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (4th).

National University of Singapore retained its position as Asia’s best university.

Polling 300 universities in total, the report found several higher academic institutions in Hong Kong made the list of top 10 universities.

These included Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (5th ), Chinese University of Hong Kong (6th ) and City University of Hong Kong (9th ).

In addition, 25 Chinese institutions made the list of the top 100, with 16 of them have improving their position this year. This was mainly due to a surge in research citations, the report found.

“The majority of the ranked Chinese institutions are increasing their research output, spurred by the impressive and sustained level of public and private investment, second only to the US,” said QS head of research Ben Sowter.

“However, the country’s leading universities are still lagging behind in terms of research citation numbers, which reveal the impact of the research they produce.”

In fact, China boasted the most represented country in the rankings with 74 institutions, beating Japan (68).

However, 14 of the 19 Japanese universities featured among the top 100, lost ground compared to 2014.

In comparison, only 9 Indian institutions featured among the top 100, with the Indian Institute of Science (34th ),emerging as the country’s leading representative.

Malaysia had six universities listed in the top 100.
