Sixty per cent of local citizens are happy with their jobs and believe a university degree is not necessary in securing a good position.

The findings come from a report by The Straits Times (ST) and Degree Census Consultancy.

“I am encouraged that many Singaporeans recognise that getting a good job depends on many factors, and not just on paper qualifications,” Heng Swee Keat, Minister of Education, told ST.

Heng added chief executives have told him they look for candidates who possess qualities such as integrity, creativity, and the ability to communicate well.

However, respondents were less optimistic when looking into the future, with the same percentage admitting they were uncertain about the next generation of workers.

This lack in confidence was mainly driven by competition from foreign employees and the attitudes of younger workers.

While the survey also found citizens and permanent residents value pay and work-life balance over job security, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin said he is not worried as this is a reflection of the current employment situation, rather than an indication that workers here have become complacent.

The report also revealed respondents respect entrepreneurs as well as those who work hands-on jobs such as cleaners and waiters.

“We need to highlight more the paths less trodden, to stimulate the imagination of our young and encourage them to venture out,” Heng said.
