Up the ranks: Yeoh Sai Yew is group director, people department at VietJet Air

After spending nearly 10 years with AirAsia, Yeoh Sai Yew moves to VietJet Air (VJ) as group director of people department. In this role, he oversees two VietJet Air companies in Vietnam and Thailand as well as VJ staff in other countries around Asia.

Speaking to Human Resources, he said: "My core responsibilities are to help bring different practices and policies between countries into one centralisation. Also to preserve the HR professionalism in this company and bring it to the next level."

"Key focus here is on standardisation and  globalisation.  The experience from my previous environment will come in handy on this journey," he adds.

He reports to the CEO and the Board Committee and is based out of Ho Chih Minh City.

At AirAsia, he was initially head of rewards and people services for two years and later became group head for the same function for six years. Subsequently, he also held the role of head of people for AirAsia X for more than two years.

In regards to the talent concerns in Asia Pacific at the moment, Yeoh mentions the shortage of talent in the aviation industry. "The talent concern cannot escape from pilots.  As the aviation industry is expanding so rapidly, shortage of pilot in the market is something that’s very common nowadays," he says.

He adds: "As for overall market, talent with digital and data know-how is critical. As this is still considered new in the market, we don’t have much talent pool in the area at the moment."
