Singapore - Malaysians working in Singapore have been warned to expect retrenchments if the Singapore economy slips even further.

According to The Star, Malaysian human resources minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said Malaysians, which comprise of 30% of the foreign workforce here, should brace themselves for retrenchments if the Singapore economy contracts even further.

"If there is unemployment due to a recession, our workers will be hit," he told The Star on Monday. He added workers needed to work on retraining and acquiring new skills to ensure job security.

Last Friday, the Singapore government recently announced that the economy is technically in a recession, as the economy shrank in its second consecutive quarter. The last time the Singapore economy shrank for two consecutive quarters was in 2002.
